From time to time, sometimes Google reveals specifics that help confirm the best practices we advise small businesses on.

Answer: Content is still King!

Content is what matches your business to a search. Your content should answer search queries related to where you are, what you do, how you can help the person searching solve their problem, and/or answer their question.

What Are the Top Ranking Factors for Local Businesses?

So what are the most important local ranking factors? Again, we look to Google for this answer.

  • Relevance. Relevance refers to how well a local business matches an individual’s search. From a content standpoint, is your website describing all your services?  
  • Distance/Proximity. How far is your business location from the person searching or the search phrase if a geographic modifier is used? From a content standpoint, is your address location accurate and easy to find across your entire digital footprint (website, Google My Business, social sites, directory listings) … for prospective customers and Google? 
  • Prominence. Prominence refers to how well-known a business is. Some businesses are more prominent in the offline world and search results try to reflect this in local ranking. Prominence is also based on information that Google has about a business from across the web (like links, articles, and directories). From a content standpoint, do you have more reviews and better ratings than your competitors?
